I came to uni not knowing how to dance but wishing desperately that I did. It feels terrible to have to sit out at parties and bops because you know that if you try to dance you will just be bobbing about awkwardly. The good news is that there is no need to feel this, if you really want to dance and love music. All you have to do is forget your inhibitions and enjoy yourself. Remember that no-one cares if you look silly, and if your dancing style is unusual it may well gain cult status in college.
The key is to break through those initial inhibitions with some energetic moves using your whole body, especially the arms. Once you’ve loosened up, you will be away.
- The Jagger strut. Put on a stern, pouty expression, jut your head, point your arm in the air and put the other arm on your hip. Stab the air with your finger and stamp your foot at the same time. The Travelling Jagger is also fun.
- Big fish little fish cardboard box
- Doing the shopping, doing the shopping, pushing the trolley, pushing the trolley
- Spirit fingers
- Ironing the clothes, ironing the clothes, folding them, folding them
- Build the house, build the house, live in it, live in it
- Towel, towel, loofah, loofah
- Golfing, golfing, hole in one, hole in one
- The Tree. Stand still with your legs together, raise your arms in the air, and thrash your upper body about.
I also recommend dancing double-time to keep the energy up and dancing aggressively in people’s faces if they are slacking – try this out and see how it is received.
